Lilith Byul: San Diego Comic Con Exclusive

A while ago I posted about the San Diego Comic Con Exclusive Byul, Lilith:

Comiccon exclusive: Vampire Byul

Initially, I was pretty excited for this doll! She’s a Byul that manages to make the freaky work for her. Later on though, other promotional pictures were released, and I began to get suspicious that the doll had either been photoshopped a little too much in the initial pictures (darkened eyeshadow, reddened lips) or they had changed the doll slightly, which often happens with prototypes. My fears, unfortunately, were confirmed when she arrived.

October Pullip Releases: Lunatic Alice

First, there was Fantastic Alice.  Then, Mini Alice.  Then, Another Alice.  Then, mini Alice again, but slightly different, with both mini dal and pullip versions.  Now, we have Lunatic Alice.    Although there is the obligatory Alice, they did mix up the rest of the cast to Wonderland characters that haven’t been done before, such as the Red Queen:

Along with The Mad Hatter/White Rabbit (I guess Tae plays both):

Dalicious Round 1: Summertime!

I was lured by the siren call of not one but 2 of KeelyVH’s custom outfits as prizes for the fourth installment of the Dalicious photo contest that I entered Pajelle. This caused all kinds of problems in the status quo: Princessa won the second Dalicious, and she is not the kind of doll that will ever give up her crown, especially not to another doll under the same roof.

The theme for Round 1 was Summertime. Pretty open-ended. I immediately thought of the Barbie Pool set I picked up on clearance a few years back that has been sitting in my basement with the other unused doll furniture I’ve collected. If the pool had been bigger (it’s about deep enough to come up to Barbie’s knees) I had dreams of Princessa with a fake shark fin, but…well things just didn’t work out that way. She’ll play her hand, just not this round.

Dalicious Round 1: Summer
This is the picture I ended up going with. It’s simple, and with the required contest size of 500×375 pixels, complicated pictures can backfire and look cluttered.

Pool Party!
Runner-up was this shot. I almost went with this picture, but I felt it didn’t focus enough on Pajelle, who is supposed to be the contestant. And while it does a great job at saying ‘adorable’, not quite as good of a job at saying ’summer’

Pool Party!
Zoomed out just a teensy bit more, and it becomes pretty obvious just how tiny the pool is. Still cute, but at this size, three is a crowd, and the pool’s at capacity
:)

Doll Review: Moxie Teenz

Moxie Teens is the newest offering from MGA, maker of Bratz.  I figured when I heard about them, that ‘teenz’ would imply a smaller doll, but it turns out they’re actually quite a bit larger.  With all of the articulation, adult sized proportions, acrylic eyes and wigs, they reminded me a lot more of the mid-sized BJDs than anything else, and I had to get one to see just how articulated she was under all her clothes (that sounds so dirty…)

More Dolly DIY

I <3 the flea market. I don’t do thrift stores, mostly because there aren’t any nearby, and I don’t do yard sales, because it’s a lot of driving, but there is a fairly large flea market not too far away every Sunday, and I rarely miss a day. It’s like going to the mall, but generally way cheaper, and you never know what you’re going to find. Like a WW2 era bazooka. Which my husband wouldn’t let me buy.

The flea market is an excellent source for old toys, as well as weird props. A couple of weekends ago I found the bratz purse-case, as well as an American Girls doll trunk.

DIY Recycled doll case

…though technically this just recycles a Bratz doll case, hey, I got it for $2 at the flea market.  Can’t get a gallon of milk for that.

Dal case (classy side)
Using contact paper and decoupage, I remodeled a Bratz Angels case. This case has a hard shell, which is awesome, but it’s covered with bratz artwork, and that just won’t do! I carefully cut contact paper to cover the outside of the shell, trimming around the fixtures and clasp first, and then used pullip flyers as decoupage material to decorate. I decided I wanted one side to be classy, so it just has a cameo type picture on one end, and the other side to be more fun.

Dal case (fun side)
This is the side with a bunch of my favorite flyers. I generally threw them out, but I kept some, like the flyer for Noir, and Nero, coupled with a few of the more recent ones sent to PUDDLE by Jun Planning USA (since they dont put them in the doll boxes anymore). In the past I’ve used flyers as material to put in pullip-sized picture frames to decorate the dollhouses.

Case interior
………Aaaand the inside view.
It is really only big enough for a Dal to stand straight in (pullips need to bend their knees) but that’s all right. I like compact. I’ve made carrier bags for multiple dolls before, and they always turn into these huge things. I’m not a big-bag kind of girl, I’m more of a small purse type. The case already had two elastic straps that secure the doll at the waist and the knees; I think if the case hadn’t had them, I would have lined it with some kind of synthetic short-hair fur.

Eos review part 2

I felt I should do a follow-up review to my first one. I noticed a lot of people are taking it as a generally bad review, which it isn’t. It’s a bad review of quality control at the Pullip factories, but Eos was worth the trouble. In fact, just because I’ve never dealt with whatever it was that came on her face before, I ordered a second one in case it turns out I didn’t fully remove the gunk a year or so from now. She’s worth that trouble too, she’s a very pretty doll and I suspect she will quickly take her place among the grails of the pullip world.

Eos

Granted, white/gray/monochrome color schemes are my weakness. Ash has white hair and gray eyes, and I’ve resisted getting any other white-haired girls (are there any? Plenty of boys, but gray/silver only on girls) or rewigging any other girls in white just to keep her more unique.

Eos Eos Eos Fae Fae

…and for good measure I got a couple more of Fae in the wa-lolita outfit. It suits her so well I know I’ll have a hard time getting her out of it. I rarely take the DSLR out of my office. I’m a bit overprotective of it, and it’s a huge camera so it’s heavy and takes up a lot of space. This is the first time I’ve taken it outside to do a photoshoot since I got it 7 months ago. I should do it more often, obviously!

Dolls + Liquor = ?

Long story short: we ended up with the remaining liquor cabinet of someone who was moving and therefore could not take said booze on plane.  Normal people would just put away such items in their own liquor cabinet.

Scotch Pin-up Girl

(I also took some pictures of the pirates cavorting with a bottle of Jack, but they didn’t come out nearly as well as Vertigo’s dressing up for the scotch)

Keely’s Cute Kimono

Evey time I want to write the name of her shop, I also want to spell “Cute” with a ‘K’ and ahahahaha…. that’s not a good idea. Anyway, this post is about Dolly (and human) seamstress KeelyVH. Like me, she’s an adult with a life beyond dolls, so she mostly works on small scale, but she has a little shop on Etsy, and if you ask her nicely and catch her at a good time, will take commissions.

Eos Review

2 things arrived today early this morning by FedEx: A computer part to fix some wonkiness I’ve had lately (thus the no updates in a while) and Eos, the first pullip doll released in a limited edition steampunk set.

EOS

Unfortunately, her awesomeness was tarnished by the fact her factory face-up had streaks and smudges in the finish I think turned out to be some kind of glue residue. Not scratches, which are harder to fix, but I still had to spend a good hour carefully cleaning and restoring her face, which does not make for a happy Requiem. More pictures and an in-depth review after the cut Read more »
